Meticulous Emulation of the Sunnah

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) says that Imam Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah) said to his companions:
“If you can ensure that all your movements are in accordance with the Sunnah, then do so, even if it be a simple act like scratching your head.”

[Shaykh (hafizahullah) adds:] Let all of your actions be connected to a noble practice from the Salaf (pious predecessors) or from their leader, our master, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). Therefore, if possible, strive to ensure that every movement you make, even a mundane act like scratching your head, is performed in adherence to one of their practices. Do not act on personal preference by doing whatever you please. No, never! Instead, you should emulate them and adhere to their guidance.

Reflection
It is for this precise reason that the life of our Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has been meticulously preserved to this day; to allow every Ummati to follow him as closely as possible. Furthermore, this diligent embodiment of the Sunnah was the life-mission of the Sahabah and the pious throughout history. They serve as our guides, having proven how to faithfully implement the Sunnah in every circumstance, thereby demonstrating its timeless relevance despite the constant change in the world.

The Sunnah Should Never Be Delayed

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) says:
On one occasion, Imam Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah) was with two of his students. One of them noticed that the other had long nails which needed trimming. He said to him: “Trim your nails.” He replied: “Insha Allah, tomorrow or the day after will be Friday, I will trim my nails on Friday.”

Imam Sufyan Thawri said to him:
“Do not delay the practice of the Sunnah for anything.”

[Shaykh (hafizahullah) comments:] This is a unique type of guidance; do not delay the practice of the Sunnah for anything.

Reflection
Shaykh (hafizahullah) once explained this principle and clarified that while removing nails and hair on a Friday is a recommended Sunnah, it is a mistake to believe this is the only time for it. To remove these from the body on a Friday is indeed a Sunnah. However, the overriding principle in the Sunnah is that these should not be allowed to grow excessively long. Hence, one should not delay their removal. They should be taken care of as soon as the need to do so arises. There should be no hesitation in putting every other Sunnah into practice as well.

Hazrat Moulana Haroon Abasoomar’s (rahimahullah) Love for the Sunnah

It is the belief of every Muslim that the only way to successfully enter Jannah is by following the Sunnah of our Beloved Nabi Muhammad (sallallahu ’alayhi wasallam). The Sunnah is all encompassing and absolutely simple as well as easy to implement.

Hazrat Moulana Haroon Abasoomar (rahimahullah) possessed unique love for the Sunnah. He would always ensure that every deed is done in accordance to the Sunnah.

Upon learning of a Sunnah that he was unaware of, he would immediately try to implement it in his life. He would constantly remind others about the Sunnah as well. He would consider missing a Sunnah as a calamity, and recite “Inna Lillah…”, if that occurred.

If he misplaced his miswak, he would become upset and disturbed. He wouldn’t drink a tablet without sitting and covering his head.

Hazrat Moulana (rahimahullah) was also extremely punctual on the recital of the Masnun Du’as for various occasions. He would repeatedly remind his associates [including little children] of the Du’as too. He had the noble habit of reciting these Du’as loudly as a reminder to others.

Reciting Surah Falaq and Nas During Inclement Weather

Sayyiduna ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates:
“While I was travelling with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) between Juhfah and Abwa, a strong wind and intense darkness enveloped us. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) began to seek refuge by reciting Surah Falaq and Surah Nas. He then said:
‘Uqbah, seek refuge through these two Surahs for none can seek refuge [with anything better] than these two Surahs…’”

Du’a for Protection from Different Types of Evils

Sayyiduna Qutbah ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to make the following Du’a:

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ مُنْكَرَاتِ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَالْأَعْمَالِ وَالْأَهْوَاءِ

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a’amali wal ahwa

Translation
O Allah, I seek Your refuge from evil character, evil actions and evil desires.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3591. Imam Tirmidhi has declared the Hadith sound.)

📝 Unfortunately, we find ourselves surrounded by all such evils in our era, making this Du’a even more important and something that should be incorporated into our daily recitals.
