A du’a to remove debts

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) told Mu’adh (radiyallahu ‘anhu), “Should I not teach you a du’a which if you recite, your debts will be cleared even if they equal to mount Uhud?” The du’a is:

Allahumma Malikal Mulk, Tu-til mulka man tasha u watanzi’ul mulka mimman tasha u, wa tu’izzu man tasha u, watudhillu man tasha u, biyadikal khayru innaka ‘ala kulli shay in Qadir Rahmanad Dunya wal Akhirati tu’tihima man tasha u wa tamna’u minhuma man tasha u irhamni rahmatan  tughni ni biha ‘an Rahmati man siwak

Translation

O Allah! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will. You grant honour to whom You will and disgrace whom You will. In Your Hand is all good. Verily, You are able to do all things. [O] Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, You grant them to whomsoever You wish and You deprive whomsoever You wish. Shower upon me such mercy, which will make me independent from the mercy of those besides You.’

A du’a for the fulfillment of debts

Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu’anha) says: “Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wasallam) would seek refuge from debts at the end of his Salah (i.e, before the salam). When he was asked about why he did it so frequently, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

“When a man falls into debt, he speaks lies and breaches his promises.”

The words of that du’a are:

اللّٰهُمَّ إني أعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ المأْثَمِ وَالمَغْرَم

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal ma-thami wal maghram

Translation

O Allah! I seek your protection from sin and debts.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 832 and 2397)

N.B. If one cannot recite this before the salam, one could recite it after the salam with the hope that Allah Ta’ala accepts it.

Generosity in Ramadan

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) narrates:

‘Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was the most generous of all the people, and he would peak in generosity during Ramadan when Jibril (‘alayhis salam) used to meet him. Jibril (‘alayhis salam) would meet him every night in Ramadan to revise the Quran. [During those days] Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was even more generous than the fair winds.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6)

Commentary

This Hadith shows that Quran recital is the best ‘ibadah in Ramadan.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 6)

Revising the Quran refers to each one reciting to the other the entire Quran [that was revealed up to that particular Ramadan].

Some Sunnats of Ramadan

The above Hadith illustrates a few additional Sunnahs of Ramadan:

1. Increased generosity. This is in keeping with practice of our Creator Allah as He himself also increases His mercies and generosity in this month. (Lataiful Ma’arif)
2. To complete an entire recital of the Holy Quran like Rasululllah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) would recite to Jibril (‘alayhis salam).
3. To listen to an entire recital of the Holy Quran, as Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) would listen to the entire recital from Jibril (‘alayhis salam).

During Tarawih, we have an opportunity to listen to the entire Quran. To physically recite it is our onus.

Sadaqah in Ramadan

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was asked, ‘After [the fast of] Ramadan, which fast is the best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘Sha’ban, in honour of Ramadan.’ It was then asked, ‘Which charity is the best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘Charity in Ramadan.’

Decreasing the duties of our staff/workers in Ramadan

Sayyiduna Salman (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said
[as part of a longer Hadith]:

“Whosoever lessens the burden of his servants [bondsmen] in this month [Ramadan], Allah will forgive him and free him from the fire of Jahannam.”
(Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith: 1887)

The potential reward for donating one date

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) said:

When one donates charity equal to a date from pure earnings, – and Allah will only accept that which is pure – Allah accepts it and grows it [the reward] just like some of you grow your young animals until it [the reward] reaches the size of a mountain.
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1410)

💡Rewards are multiplied in accordance to one’s sincerity & good heartedness. The purer the heart/intention, the greater the reward.

Sadaqah benefits three people

Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘When a woman spends [in charity] fairly [without wastage] from the food of her home, she is rewarded for spending from the wealth, her husband is rewarded for his earning that item and the servant is also rewarded. The reward of each does not decrease the others in the least bit.’
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1425)

One’s decreed portion of sustenance will definitely reach him

Sayyiduna Jabir (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “If the son of Adam were to flee from his sustenance like how he flees from death, his sustenance would still reach him just as his death reaches him.”

(Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 7 pg. 90 and vol. 8 pg. 246. Also see: Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1147-1148)

Explanation

Allah Ta’ala has taken it upon himself to see to the sustenance of his creation (Surah Hud, Verse: 6) and each person will only receive what is decreed for him. This Hadith therefore explains that supposing a person were to flee from his sustenance, he would still get what is decreed for him. The Hadith also encourages moderation in seeking sustenance as a person will only receive what is decreed.

(Refer: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 7401 and As Sirajul Munir, vol. 3 pg. 211)

There is no deceit/fraud in Islam

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has narrated that a man mentioned to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) that he would get conned in business transactions.

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) then said: ‘Say to whomsoever you deal with “لا خِلابة”.’

[There is/should be no fraud/deceit]

From then on, whenever he would make a transaction, he would say “لا خلابة”.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1533)

Explanation

The commentators of Hadith have mentioned the phrase لا خلابة to mean: “There is no deceit or fraud in Islam.”
This is an expression which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) advised this particular Sahabi to say before enacting any deal so as to warn and remind the other party to remain upright and adhere to the principles and teachings of Islam.

(Refer: Al-Minhaj, Hadith: 3838, Fathul Bari, Hadith: 2117, and Mirqat, Hadith: 2803)

We should all remind ourselves of this Prophetic advise whenever we are trading.

Spending haram wealth on noble causes will still result in sin

Sayyiduna Abut Tufayl (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whomsoever earns haram wealth, then sets a slave free from that wealth or joins family ties with that wealth, he will be sinful for those [deeds].”

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir; Refer; Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 291/292)
