Visiting the sick

Every community has people who fall ill.
In Islam, we are encouraged to visit such people and not to neglect them.
The extent of the importance of this can be gauged from the three authentic Hadiths below:

1⃣ ‘When a Muslim visits a sick Muslim at dawn, seventy thousand angels make du’a of forgiveness for him till dusk. If he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand Angels make du’a of forgiveness for him till the morning, and he will be granted a garden in Jannah.’
(Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud & others)

2⃣ ‘Whoever makes a proper wudu, and sets out to visit his sick Muslim brother with the expectation of reward, will be distanced seventy years [journey] away from Jahannam.’
(Abu Dawud & Tabarani)

3⃣ ‘When one sets out to visit the sick, he enters into Allah’s mercy. When he sits beside the sick person, he is totally immersed in mercy.’
(Muwatta, Musnad Ahmad & others)

Lets take advantage of these great rewards, by habitually visiting the ill.
It is actually our duty to visit & care for them, which is unfortunately being neglected by many in our era.

⏱ Time for Rehearsal

The sighting of the Crescent of Sha’ban signals the good news of Ramadan’s imminent arrival. A believer grows in anticipation with the passing of each day. Days like these, are what a believer ‘lives for’.

The best month to fast, outside Ramadan 👌🏽
Nabi (sallallahu ’alayhi wasallam) would increase his optional (nafl) fast in this month.
Sayyidatuna ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that I never saw Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) fasting in any other month as much as he did in Sha’ban.’
(Sahih Bukhari,1969 & Sahih Muslim,2714).

In light of the above, and other Hadiths, some ‘Ulama state that Sha’ban is the best month for nafl fasts, especially if it is done with the motive of preparing for Ramadan.
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg. 248-249. Also see Sunan Tirmidhi,663)

Caution
One should avoid fasting after the 15th of Sha’ban, so that strength may be preserved for Ramadan.
(Sunan Nasai,2923)

📌 A Month for Rehearsal
In addition to it being the most virtuous month -outside Ramadan- to fast, another reason [among others] for Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) increasing his optional fast in Sha’ban was to prepare for Ramadan as well as to respectfully welcome Ramadan.
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg. 258 and Fathul Bari,1969)

✏This illustrates how Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wasallam) would spiritually prepare himself in advance for the most auspicious month of the year; Ramadan.
✅ It is like the Sunnah Salah we offer before and after the Fard Salah. For the Fard fast of Ramadan, we are taught to offer nafl fasts before and after (viz. in Sha’ban and Shawwal)
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg.249)

Similarly, the Sahabah (radiyallahu ’anhum) and Tabi’un (rahimahumullah) would also engage in what we would understand as ‘spiritual preparation’ for Ramadan.
💎Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ’anhu) says:
‘When Sha’ban would commence, the Muslims (Sahabah and Tabi’un) would dedicate themselves to the recital of the Quran.’
Some are reported to have discharged their Zakah too, in Sha’ban.
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg.258)

Hafiz Ibn Rajab Al-Hambaly (rahimahullah) writes:
‘Since Sha’ban is a prelude to Ramadan, Islam encourages certain deeds in this month, that are usually done in Ramadan. Like fasting and Quran recital. This prepares the soul to welcome Ramadan with open arms, when it arrives.’
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg.258)

Moral
These are glaring lessons on the spiritual preparation for Ramadan. It’s a month in which we can rehearse these additional nafl deeds (viz, optional fasts up to the 15th, Quran recital, Charity etc).

⏳ Another form of preparation
In addition to the above deeds and their like, there is another form of preparation that is absolutely essential.
That is to settle our disputes and cleanse the hearts from jealousy, rancour and I’ll-feelings.

People who hold onto old grudges, and do not settle their disputes, nor cleanse their hearts are usually deprived on Allah’s mercy, even on blessed occasions.

Therefore it is imperative for a believer, as part of his preparation for Ramadan, to sort out such issues ahead of time.

15th Shaban 🌌
The beginning of Sha’ban is a time for us to reset our minds hearts and routines for Ramadan.

Barley two weeks into the month, will bring the occasion of the fifteenth night of Sha’ban. This night is labelled as the second most auspicious night of the year, by some Scholars.
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg. 264)

Allah Ta’ala, through His wisdom granted the Ummah this auspicious night as a prelude to Ramadan.
On that night too, those who harbour ill-feelings are deprived of Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness.

🗝 Now is the time
The best time for change, is now! Never delay in making a reformed decision.
Therefore, one should understand that today is an ideal time to reflect on the above and to make efforts to implement them too. Let’s increase our nafl ‘ibadah from today, so that when Ramadan does arrive, we are well rehearsed and ready to maximise our benefit therefrom.
May Allah Ta’ala guide and inspire us all. Amin.

💡How much do you know about the 15th night of Sha’ban❓
The second most auspicious night of the Islamic calendar… 🗓🕌
👌🏽The illustrious Maliki ‘Alim; Ibnul Haj (rahimahullah) states:

What to do on Auspicious Nights?

Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ has mentioned:
“Indeed your Rabb has reserved certain special moments in time (in which he emits abundant/special mercy)
Be sure to avail yourselves for these opportunities.” (Majma’uz Zawaaid)
We are usually aware of the significant occasions that present themselves each year. The crucial thing is how do we “avail ourselves” and maximise our benefit from these blessed nights?
Here under is a suggested format for “What to do on Blessed nights?”
Practicing on the following 10 points won’t take more than an hour insha Allah.

1 Offer the Maghrib, Esha & Fajr Salahs in congregation.
– receive the reward of spending the entire night in ‘ibadah.
2 Sleep in the state of wudhu.
– your soul will make sajdah under the ‘Arsh (Throne) of Allah ﷻ‎.
3 Abstain from sin.
4 Clear your heart from ill-feelings towards fellow Muslims.
– or else be deprived of Allah’s mercy.
5 Salatut Tasbeeh.
see next message.
6 Tilawat (Recital) of Quran.
7 Salawat on Rasulullah ﷺ
8 Dhikr.
There are many forms of Dhikrullah. the following are suggested:
A hundred times “Laa ilaah illallah”
A hundred times repeating the name of “Allah”
And a hundred times:
“Subhaanallahi wabihamdihi subhanallahil ‘Azeem”
9 Du’a.
“Du’a is the essence of Worship” and hence cannot be omitted when we engage in worship.
More so on occasions when Almighty Allah ﷻ‎ accepts duas such as on the night of Qadr. One should spend a lengthy duration in begging from Allah, as we are all in need of it.
In light of the current world crisis, do remember our oppressed brethren around the globe.
🔟 Tawbah.
The procedure for Tawbah is:
a. Perform two rak’aats of Salaah. (Optional)
b. Stop the sin that one is repenting from.
c. Regret the sin from the bottom of your heart.
d. Make a determined pledge with Allah ﷻ‎ never to repeat that sin.Besides the two rak’aats of Salah, the remainder are all fundamental.

❗Furthermore, if the sin involved usurping the right of the next person, one needs to ask him/her for forgiveness too. Without this we are not guaranteed forgiveness.
❗If that person has passed away, we could make dua for him and repay the debt (if any) to his/her heirs.

📌 Note 1: The above can all be achieved in about 1 hour only.
Salatut Tasbeeh: 20 mins
Tawbah: can be incorporated in the du’a
Zikr: 10 mins
Salawaat: 5 mins
Tilawat: 15 mins
Du’a & Tawbah: 10 mins
However if one is short on time for whatever reason, then the following 5 points are suggested:
a) Esha & Fajr with Jamat
b) Sleep with Wudhu
c) Abstain from sin
d) clean the heart
e) Du’a
📌 Note 2: The night commences at Maghrib, not after Esha or after Taraweeh or at Sehri time. Therefore one can and should commence ‘ibadah from Maghrib, although it is indeed best to do so at the last part of the night.
📌 Note 3: These are mere suggestions intended to make it easy for people. One may engage in whatever form of ‘ibadah one is comfortable with.
May Allah Ta’ala grant us all complete forgiveness and steadfastness on guidance. Ameen.

🕯Please do remember the writer in your supplication as well.

Ramadan is approaching 🌌

The following are the inspiring words of the great luminary; ‘Allamah Muhammad Yusuf Al Binnory (rahimahullah)

The divine blessings of Ramadan
Ramadan is approaching. It will bring down the nur and special attention of Allah Ta’ala. It is a time of forgiveness for all the sins of the Ummah. The generosity of the Absolutely Generous (Allah) will encompass all. Iman and good deeds will flourish. The curtailing of eating, drinking and relations will create the ability to abstain from sins. The doors of Jannah will be opened. Locks will be placed on the doors of Jahannam. Every night the announcement will be made of numerous sinners being freed from the fire of Jahannum.

Wisdom of Allah’s commands 💎
The commands and practices that Allah Ta’ala sent to the world are for the reformation of the heart, through which the soul becomes illuminated, and humans become distinguished from animals.
This causes those who are not practicing begin to practice and individuals that have neglected Allah Ta’ala become Allah-conscious.
Humans are distinguished from the level of animals and attain angelic qualities. The poor will be taken care of. The destitute and orphans will be shown mercy. In short, humans will become adorned with the highest level of character and good qualities.

📚 Duties of Ramadan
For these reasons, Allah Ta’ala made the fasting of Ramadan compulsory and standing in Salah at night, a sunnah. So that a believing slave can read or listen to the Quran in these nights [and have his soul purified]. At times, he is making sajdah in the court of Allah Ta’ala, sometimes performing ruk’u with dignity and respect, sometimes standing, warming the heart with the touching melody of the Quran. In Ramadan, one becomes the embodiment of
یذكرون الله قیاما وقعودا وعلى جنوبهم
‘They remember Allah standing, sitting and reclining’ (Surah Aalu ‘Imran, Ayah: 191)
In addition to reciting/listening to the Quran at night, one is guided to practice on the Quran in the day.

What to achieve & how to achieve it 🔎
[During this blessed month], Lower your gazes and keep your tongues silent except for good words. Abstain from fighting and quarrelling. Don’t fulfil any demand of evil temptation or desires. Give sadaqah. Hurry in all works of good and do not refuse to fulfil your obligations. Stay away from all evils. In short, reform your character, appearance, action and conduct, and become an angel entirely. Such reformation of the inner and outer-self should be made that from head to toe, it becomes apparent that this is an individual of an Allah-conscious nation.

Speaking good of the deceased ✅

To attend a funeral is the right of our fellow Muslims and indeed very rewarding.
The Tabi’i; Imam Mujahid (rahimahullah) said: ‘Attending a funeral is the best of voluntary (nafl) acts.’ 👌🏽
(Refer: Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1323)

📌Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) has discouraged the ummah in several Hadiths against speaking ill of the deceased. One should rather speak good of fellow Muslims who are deceased. 💎

💎Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:
‘Do not curse the dead..’
(Sahih Bukhari,1393)

💎Sayyidatuna Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:
‘When you attend a funeral (or visit a sick person), then speak good [about the deceased/the sick], for the Angels say amin to your du’a.’
(Sahih Muslim, 2126)

Morally too, it’s incorrect to attack a person who cannot defend himself…
🤲🏼 May Allah Ta’ala shower his choicest mercies on all the deceased believers. Amin.

The Sunnah of Nafl Salah in a vehicle 🕌🚗

In our era of hustle and bustle, the following sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) is quite pertinent and appropriate:
Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would perform nafl salah on his conveyance while he was out of the town.
(Sahih Bukhari,1096 & Sahih Muslim,1608, 1616)

The Fuqaha (Jurists) have mentioned that this practice (of offering nafl salah in one’s conveyance) is Mustahab (encouraged). 👌🏽
✅This has also been the practice of our Seniors.

✍🏼 Notes:
While offering nafl salah in one’s vehicle the following should be borne in mind:
1⃣ This salah can be offered while sitting in a vehicle as soon as a person is out of any town/locality.
(Shami, 2/38-39)

2⃣ It is not necessary for the person who intends performing this salah to be a Musaafir (undertaking a journey of 77 Kms or more).
(Shami, 2/38-39 & Tahtawi, pg.221)

3⃣ It is not necessary to face the qiblah when performing nafl salah in the vehicle.
(Sahih Bukhari,1096 & Shami, 2/39)

4⃣ This salah can be offered with shoes as long as there is no impurity on them.
(Shami, 2/39)

5⃣ The ruku’ and sajdah will be done by lowering the head. (it should be lower in sajdah than in ruku’).
(Sunan Abi Dawud,1220)
One should not make ruku’ or sajdah by placing the head on anything. (‘Alamgiri, 1/143)

6⃣ According to some Scholars, the driver can also perform this salah as long as he does not endanger his life or the lives of his passengers.
(Shami, 2/39 & ‘Alamgiri, 1/143)
i.e, the salah will still be valid despite him manoeuvring his vehicle.

7⃣ One who wishes to observe this salah must be in the state of wudu.

8⃣ One may only offer nafl (optional) salah [not the fard] in the above manner.

A blessing from Allah 💎
The renowned commentator of Sahih Bukhari; Hafidh Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes: “The secret behind this relaxation in the rules is: that through the mercy of Allah upon the ummah they are now able to increase their nawaafil (optional) prayers and thereby earn huge rewards from Allah.💎 (Fathul Bari 2/743 Hadith:1099)

💡 Most people spend some time or the other in traffic on a daily or weekly basis. Let’s take advantage of the above sunnah of our Beloved (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam).
Lets practice this & teach it to fellow passengers.

Rewards that we will receive even after death 💎

In addition to earning rewards during our lifetime, our beautiful Din also shows us how to secure continuous rewards for ourselves even after death.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:
‘The following are among those deeds whose rewards benefit a believer even after his demise:
1⃣ Knowledge that he taught and spread to others,
2⃣ A pious child that survives him. (The parents will continue to be rewarded for all the good that the child does),
3⃣ A copy of Qur’an that he passes on as inheritance,
4⃣ A Masjid that he constructed/donated towards,
5⃣ A home that he built for travellers,
6⃣ A well that he dug/sponsored,
7⃣ Any other form of charity that he offers while in good health and before he left the world,
He will continue to receive the reward for all of these after his demise.’
(Sunan ibn Majah,242; Sahih ibn Khuzaymah,2490)

These are simple deeds which may be done according to one’s ability. By practising upon any of these ⬆, we will be securing our own future insha Allah.

Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s emphasis on the Sunnah 📿

✍🏼 Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s son, Dr Muhyuddeen (hafizhahumallah), writes:
‘My respected father continuously encouraged his family in the home to adopt the various Sunnahs of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). He encourages them by saying that these Sunnahs create closeness and love for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). Being laxed in the Sunnah is a result of hardheartedness, and it distances a person from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam).❗

Among the Sunnahs that my respected father was very particular about, are the following:👌🏽

1⃣ Keeping the pants above the ankles.

2⃣ Covering the head.

3⃣ Offering the Sunnah Salah before and after the Fard Salah.

4⃣ Offering the Fard Salah in congregation.

5⃣ Doing every good thing with the right.

6⃣ Spreading the Salam.

7⃣ In Ramadan he would emphasis the offering of [20 rakats] Tarawih Salah for even the juniors.

8⃣ He was very particular about the Sunnah of partaking of Sehri. He would personally wake up his family and children at the time of Sehri even if they have to take a few morsels. This was to fulfill the Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) and to attain its barakah. [To fully understand this, one should bear in mind that the general habit in Arabia is for people to remain awake for most of the night in Ramadan. Therefore, by Sehri time, the young ones would be exhausted and asleep.]

9⃣ He would also encourage us as children, to give Sadaqah every day, even if it had to be something very minimal. He would -sometimes- give us the charity to give to a poor person or a pious person and he would tell us to go and give it with our hands and ask for du’a from that person.

🔟 He would also encourage us to follow the adab and etiquettes of Islam [in all aspects of live]. For this, he strongly suggested the kitab of Shaykh Abul Fattah Abu Ghuddah (rahimahullah) entitled: Islamic Manners. He would tell us: this kitab is what Shaykh Abul Fattah (rahimahullah) practically demonstrated in his life.’

(Extracted from: Safahatun mudi-ah, pg. 71-73)

🤲🏼 May Allah Ta’ala preserve Shaykh ‘Awwamah for many more years with good health & complete ‘afiyah. Amin.

🔪 Qurbani/Udhiyah, with your own hands 👌🏽

Its a trend nowadays for people to have their Qurbani/Udhiyah animal slaughtered by others, at some far off farm, or even abroad.
Whilst there may be justifiable reason for some, one should consider the following:

👉🏽 Several Hadiths mention that, On the day of Eidul Adha, Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would not eat anything until he returned [from the Eid salah]. Then he would eat the liver of his own animal of slaughter.

💎 Lessons:

In light of these narrations, the Fuqaha (Jurists) have ruled it preferable (mustahabb) to let the first thing one eats on Eidul Adha be from one’s own animal of sacrifice.

✍🏼 Those who assign their animals to be slaughtered by some far off farmer or abroad, and do not slaughter their animals themselves, or under their personal supervision, or locally, are actually deprived of this recommended deed…

🔪 Further, the rewards for personally slaughtering the animal are also lost to such people.

❗ Such people don’t fully experience the spirit of Qurbani/Udhiyah as well.

💎Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
’When Dhul Hijjah begins and a person intends to make udhiyah (slaughter on Eid day), then he should not remove hair nor clip his nails [until his animal is slaughtered].’
(Sahih Muslim,5090)

❓ How would such a person practice on the above Hadith, when he doesn’t know on which day his animal is being slaughtered?

👌🏽 As followers of Nabi Muhammad (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam), we should always be striving for the ideal Sunnah.
🤲🏼 May Allah Ta’ala remove the obstacles from those who are genuinely forced by circumstances to delegate their slaughter to others. Amin.
Fortunate indeed are those who get tawfiq to do it locally & personally.

Some benefits of reciting Surah Baqarah in the home 🏠

✅Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:
‘…Recite Surah Al Baqarah, for [reciting it & practising on it] is a blessing. Abandoning it will be a cause of grief and regret, & those involved in witchcraft cannot confront it.’
(Sahih Muslim,1871)

✅Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:
‘…Indeed Shaytan flees from that home in which Surah Baqarah is recited.’
(Sahih Muslim,1821)

💡People generally like to have their homes secure from the effects of black magic, evil Jinn etc.
We should therefore form a habit of reciting Surah Baqarah in our homes & businesses, as it keeps away the Jinn as well as black magic.

The last 2⃣ verses of Surah Baqarah

Reciting a few verses for the reward of Tahajjud 🕌

💎 Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radiyallahu’anhu) said:
’Whoever recites the last few Verses of Surah Aalu ‘Imran at night, will receive the reward of standing up in ‘ibadah for one night.’
(Sunan Darimi,3439)

💡The ‘Last few Verses’ refer to from Verse: 190 (إن في خلق السماوات والأرض) till the end of the Surah.
(Mirqatul Mafatih,2171)
Let’s make this a nightly habit. 👌🏽
In a narration of Sahih Bukhari, it is reported that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) recited this himself, upon awakening for tahajjud as well.
