What to do on Auspicious Nights?

Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ has mentioned:
“Indeed your Rabb has reserved certain special moments in time (in which he emits abundant/special mercy)
Be sure to avail yourselves for these opportunities.” (Majma’uz Zawaaid)

We are usually aware of the significant occasions that present themselves each year. The crucial thing is how do we “avail ourselves” and maximise our benefit from these blessed nights?
Here under is a suggested format for “What to do on Blessed nights?”

Practicing on the following 10 points won’t take more than an hour insha Allah.

  1. Offer the Maghrib, Esha & Fajr Salahs in congregation.
  2. Sleep in the state of wudhu.
  3. Abstain from sin.
  4. Clear your heart from ill-feelings towards fellow Muslims.
  5. Salatut Tasbeeh.
  6. Tilawat (Recital) of Quran.
  7. Salawat on Rasulullah ﷺ
  8. Dhikr.

There are many forms of Dhikrullah. the following are suggested:
A hundred times “Laa ilaah illallah”
A hundred times repeating the name of “Allah”
And a hundred times:
“Subhaanallahi wabihamdihi subhanallahil ‘Azeem”

  1. Du’a.

“Du’a is the essence of Worship” and hence cannot be omitted when we engage in worship.
More so on occasions when Almighty Allah ﷻ‎ accepts duas such as on the night of Qadr. One should spend a lengthy duration in begging from Allah, as we are all in need of it.
In light of the current world crisis, do remember our oppressed brethren around the globe.
On the night of Qadr the following Du’a should also be repeated as taught by Rasulullah ﷺ to his beloved wife Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha):

اللهم إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوُ فَاعْفُ عَنِّيْ

“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘Anni”

O Allah! You are indeed Most Forgiving, so forgive me.

  1. Tawbah.

The procedure for Tawbah is:
a. Perform two rak’aats of Salaah. (Optional)
b. Stop the sin that one is repenting from.
c. Regret the sin from the bottom of your heart.
d. Make a determined pledge with Allah ﷻ‎ never to repeat that sin.Besides the two rak’aats of Salah, the remainder are all fundamental.

Furthermore, if the sin involved usurping the right of the next person, one needs to ask him/her for forgiveness too. Without this we are not guaranteed forgiveness.

If that person has passed away, we could make dua for him and repay the debt (if any) to his/her heirs.

Note 1: The above can all be achieved in about 1 hour only.
Salatut Tasbeeh: 20 mins
Tawbah: can be incorporated in the du’a
Zikr: 10 mins
Salawaat: 5 mins
Tilawat: 15 mins
Du’a & Tawbah: 10 mins

However if one is short on time for whatever reason, then the following 5 points are suggested:
a) Esha & Fajr with Jamat
b) Sleep with Wudhu
c) Abstain from sin
d) clean the heart
e) Du’a

Note 2: The night commences at Maghrib, not after Esha or after Taraweeh or at Sehri time. Therefore one can and should commence ‘ibadah from Maghrib, although it is indeed best to do so at the last part of the night.

Note 3: These are mere suggestions intended to make it easy for people. One may engage in whatever form of ‘ibadah one is comfortable with.
May Allah Ta’ala grant us all complete forgiveness and steadfastness on guidance. Ameen.

Please do remember the writer in your supplication as well.

When to Discharge the Sadaqatul Fitr?

There are several Hadiths that encourage discharging the sadaqatul fitr before the Eid salah. Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has included the following chapter in his famous book; Sahih Bukhari:

‘The chapter of [discharging] the sadaqah before Eid.’

The following Hadith appears under this chapter:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah ﷺ instructed that the sadaqatul fitr (fitrah) be given [to the poor] before the people go out to the Eid salah.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1509)

Based on the above, the ‘Ulama have ruled that it is better (mustahab) to pass the fitrah to the poor and needy before the Eid salah. ✅

A Misconception

However, there is a misconception among the people that by them putting their fitrah into the collection boxes which are in the masajid etc before Eid, they have discharged their fitrah on time!

This is an incorrect notion. ❌

What is required (mustahabb) is that the Fitrah reaches the poor before the Eid salah.

Practice of the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum)

In the time of the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) the collection of the fitrah would take place a few days before Eid.
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1511)

This was obviously done so that the collectors had time to pass on the fitrah to the needy in time, before the Eid salah.

We too can implement this system insha Allah by ensuring that we either give our fitrah directly to the poor before Eid salah, or by placing it into the tins/boxes a few days early. ⏰

The collecting organisations can then arrange for these tins to be collected on 28 Ramadan for example.

The imams of the masajid can also educate their congregations in this regard.

This will avail the different organisations enough time to distribute the fitrah on schedule insha Allah.

The poor will also have a more joyous Eid if they receive the Fitrah on time.

That is the ideal we should be striving for, and with a little bit of attention, this can easily be achieved.

A Simple Format for Salatut Tasbeeh

On Mubarak (blessed) nights, we are encouraged to offer salatut tasbeeh

One who offers this salah, will have all his/her sins forgiven including the major sins.

Approximate duration for this salah: 25 mins.

There are several methods for offering this salah. One should stick to whichever is easy.

Hereunder is 1 simple format for Salatut Tasbeeh in light of what is mentioned in Sunan Tirmidhi, after hadith: 481:

Make the niyyah: O Allah I intend offering 4 rak’ats salatut tasbeeh for your sake facing the qiblah.

After commencing the salah, recite the thana. Before the surah fatihah, recite the tasbeeh mentioned at the end of this message 15 times.

Thereafter recite the qirat as normal.

At the end of the qirat, before going into ruku’ recite the tasbeeh 10 times.

In ruku’ [after reciting the normal ‘Subhaana Rabbiyal ‘Azeem’] recite the tasbeeh below 10 times.

When standing after ruku’ [after reciting ‘Rabbana lakal Hamd’] recite the tasbeeh 10 times.

In each sajdah [after reciting ‘Subhana Rabbiyal A’la] recite the tasbeeh below 10 times.

Between the 2 sajdahs also recite 10 times.

When one rises for the second rak’at [& the rest of the rak’ats] do as mentioned above.

In this manner one would recite this tasbeeh 75 times in each rak’at x4 rak’ats = 300 times in the entire salah.

If one forgets to recite at a particular juncture, it may be added to the next posture.

The tasbeeh to be recited is:
Subhaanallaahi wal Hamdu lillahi walaa ilaaha illallaahu WAllaahu Akbar

See here for a detailed discussion on the authenticity of Salatut Tasbeeh:

Authenticity of Salatut Tasbih

The essence of the 6 fasts of Shawwal

As Ramadan departs, we all are encouraged to extend the momentum by observing the six fasts of Shawwal. These fasts cover up the defects in our Ramadan fasts.

The famous Hadith in Sahih Muslim states:

“Whoever observes the fast of Ramadan and follows it up with six fasts in Shawwal will be rewarded as if he has fasted the entire year”

Commentary

The Hadith masters have explained that since every deed is multiplied ten times, by fasting in Ramadan we are actually rewarded for 300 days and not just the 30 in Ramadan. Therefore if we follow that up with six more we will be rewarded for sixty thereby attaining the reward of fasting for 360 days.

Why in Shawwal?

The general Hadith commentators have said that the reason for Rasulullah ﷺ encouraging us to observes these fasts immediately after Ramadan, is so that a muslim does not delay in accruing this grand reward. ☑

It is also easier for people to fast these six days immediately after Ramadan. ☑

Another Perspective

Hafiz Ibn Rajab Al-Hambali (rahimahullah) has offered the following interesting perspective:

“…the reward of fasting in Shawwal will be linked to the reward of Ramadan, and one who observes the Shawwal fast will receive the reward of observing the fard fast for the whole year.
This is the explanation of Imam ‘Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah).”
(Lataiful Ma’arif, pg.314-315)

So those who fast the additional six fasts in Shawwal specifically, will actually receive the reward of observing the Fard fast for the entire year!

Through this Allah ﷻ‎ has blessed the ummah by ordaining the fast of 30 days only, but they have the potential to acquire the reward of 360 days of obligatory fast!

The difference in reward for Fard & Nafl deeds

The ‘Ulama state that the reward of a fard act is actually 70 more than the nafl (voluntary) deeds!!

(Sharhun Nawawi ‘ala Sahih Muslim, vol.1 pg.324)

Consolation for those who miss the fast in Shawwal

If one missed the six fasts of Shawwal, the reward of fasting the entire year can still be achieved if one fasts the six additional fasts in any other month after Shawwal. Since every act is rewarded tenfold. However, in this case, the six extra fasts will yield the reward of sixty nafl (voluntary) fasts & not the reward of the mandatory (fard) fast.

Al-Mufhim, vol.3 pg.238, Mirqat, vol.4 pg.477, & Fathul Mulhim, vol.5 pg.328.

Treasure every Sunrise!

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu’anhu) would recite the following du’a at sunrise.
Lets ponder over its meaning, take heed and practice.

اَلْحَمْدُ ِلِله الَّذِى اَقَالَنَا يَوْمَنَا هَذَا وَلَم يُهْلِكْنَا بِذُنُوْبِنَا

Allahumdulillahil ladhi aqalana yawmana hadha wa lam yuhlikna bi dhunubina

Translation

All praise is for Allah, who has afforded us this day and did not destroy us for our sins.

(Sahih Muslim, hadith: 1908)

Sayyiduna ibn Mas’ud is the most knowledgable Sahabi after the Four Khulafa (radiyallahu’anhum).

In this supplication, he teaches us to treasure every new day!

✅ One more day, is one more chance to earn Allah’s ﷻ‎ pleasure, it’s one more chance to repent for our sins.

One who commences his day with this mindset of gratitude to Allah ﷻ‎, will truly value his time & life.
He who is grateful doesn’t disobey his Rabb ﷻ‎.

The meaning of this du’a is so profound, it’s worthy of being recited/remembered throughout the day too, especially in times of the current global disasters.

May Allah ﷻ‎ protect us all.

Looking at the Imam during the Friday Khutbah

Question

Is there any hadith about looking at the imam during the Jumu’ah khutbah?

Have any of the Fuqaha written that this practice is sunnah?

Answer

Yes, indeed.

The men in the congregation are encouraged to face the Imam without turning their chests away from the qiblah during the khutbah.

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has named a chapter in his sahih as:

Chapter on the imam facing the congregation, & them facing the imam during the khutbah

✏ Under this chapter he has cited the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudry (radiyallahu’anhu): “Rasulullah ﷺ sat on the minbar one day and we (the Sahabah-radiyallahu’anhum) sat around him.” (i.e, and faced him)

(Sahih Bukhari, hadith: 921)

✏ Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) supports this by saying: “Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar and Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhuma) faced the imam (i.e, during the khutbah)

The view of the Fuqaha

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) also included a chapter like this in his Sunan.
✏ He writes: “This practice has been preferred by the Sahabah and other ‘Ulama, like Imam Sufyan Thawri, Imam Shafi’i, Imam Ahmad & Imam Is-haq ibn Rahuyah (rahimahumullah).”

Moulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (rahimahullah) says:
✅ “The sunnah is to face the imam.”

(Faydul Bari, vol.2 pg.337)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) – the famous commentator on Sahih Bukhari- says:
✅ “This practice is Mustahab (good) according to the majority of the scholars.”

(Fathul Bari, hadith:921)

Ibnul Mundhir (rahimahullah) said:
“I don’t know of any difference of opinion on this… there is almost consensus on the issue”

✏ The Hanafi commentator of Bukhari; ‘Allamah ‘Aini (rahimahullah) quotes from Al-Mabsut- a classical Hanafi fiqh book-, that Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) would sit in the row (saff) and after the (second) adhan, he would turn his head to face the imam. i.e, without turning his entire body.
(‘Umdatul Qari, hadith: 921)

Note: If one cannot turn his head towards the imam without turning his chest away from the qiblah, then such a person should rather face the qiblah, instead of disrupting the straight row –saff

(Ma’arifus sunan, vol.4 pg.364)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,

Suggested du’a for driving in slippery conditions

‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has quoted a Scholar from the past to have suggested the following du’a for protection against ones conveyance skidding/slipping:

إنَّ اللهَ يُمْسِكُ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرْضَ أَنْ تَزُولا

InnAllaha yumsikus samawati wal arda an tazula

Indeed Allah ﷻ‎ is the One who keeps the heavens and the earth from moving/shaking.

(Al-Ibtihaj, bi adhkaril musafiri wal haaj)

This du’a is quite apt & is derived from ayah: 41 in surah: 35

Recite frequently when driving in bad weather

Use for the useless

As the seasons change and with the passage of time, one feels the need to acquire new clothing. At times, when new garments arrive, the old ones tend to find a place in the corner of the wardrobe /closet, never to be worn again.

Have we ever reflected over the agony of that person who has to endure the icy wind of winter, while we have a wide range of warm clothing lying unused?

When one adopts the Sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ, then even those ‘useless’ old clothes become ‘useful’.

What to do when we acquire new clothes?

Upon receiving new clothes, Rasulullah ﷺ would donate his old clothes and say, ‘whoever adorns new cloths, recites the following du’a and thereafter donates his old clothing to a poor Muslim, remains in the protection, patronage and Divine veil of Allah ﷻ‎ throughout his life as well as after his demise. As long as even one thread (of the donated clothing) remains on somebody’s body.’

That dua is:

الحَمْدُ ِللهِ الَّذِي كَسانِي ما أُوارِي بِه عوَرِتيْ واتجَمَّلُ به في حَياتِي

Alhamdulillahil ladhi kasani ma uwari bihi ‘awrati wa atajammalu bihi fi hayati

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3560, Al Mustadrak, vol.4, pg.193)

Additional value

The rewards stated above are obtained when the destitute merely dons those garments. The reward will definitely multiply if he/she were to wear those clothes whilst offering salah, observing the fast or any other virtuous deed…

Our duty to those around us

Furthermore, as a Muslim minority, this also affords us the opportunity to extend the warmth of Islam to the indigenous population of our country. Imagine the reward one could acquire, if through this simple deed somebody embraces Islam.

If this is the reward for donating old clothes, what would be in store for one who donates new clothing?

Millions in seconds!! ⏳

Many of us frequently find ourselves in the shopping areas.
The following Hadith is worth noting whenever we are there:

Rasulullah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever recites the following du’a in the bazaar/shopping area/malls etc, will receive a million rewards, one million of his sins shall be forgiven, his rank will be raised by a million stages and (in some narrations) he will receive a palace in Jannah.’

This Hadith has been authenticated by the following Imams:
Imam Hakim, ‘Allamah Mundhiri & ‘Allamah Dimyati (rahimahumullah).

Some of the narrators of this Hadith would intentionally go to the bazaar to merely recite this du’a and acquire its rewards. ⚖
