Du’a to be free of debts and worries

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that once Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) entered the masjid and found an Ansari Sahabi by the name of Abu Umamah (radiyallahu’anhu) seated therein. Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) enquired of him:
‘Why is it that I see you in the masjid at a time when there is no salah?’

He replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah! I have a lot of debts and many worries.’

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) replied, ‘Should I not teach you something which if you recite, Allah will remove your worries and pay off your debts? Say every morning and evening:

Allahumma Inni a’udhubika minal hammi wal huzni wa a’udhubika minal ‘Ajzi wal kasali wa a’udhubika minal bukhli wal jubni wa a’udhubika min ghalabatid dayni wa qahrir rijal

Translation: O Allah! I seek refuge in you from anxiety and grief and I seek refuge in you from inability and laziness, and I seek refuge in you from cowardice and miserliness and I seek refuge in you from overpowering debts and from the subjection of man.

That Sahabi (radiyallahu’anhu) says, ‘I did so and Allah Ta’ala removed my worries and repaid my debts.’

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1550)

Showing leniency to the debtor

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘There was a man in the past who was about to die. The Angel asked him: ‘Have you ever did any good?’

He replied: ‘I am unaware of such.’

He was told to think again after which he said: ‘I don’t know of anything [good that I did] besides the fact that I would be lenient when dealing with people; I would give time to the one who could still afford and waive [the debt of] the one who couldn’t afford it.’

Allah Ta’ala admitted this person to Jannah.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3451)

The reward of granting respite to a debtor

Abu Qatadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once demanded payment from his debtor who then disappeared. Abu Qatadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) located him and [the debtor] said:
‘I am unable to pay.’ After taking an oath from him that he is unable to pay, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say:

“Whomsoever wishes that Allah save him from the torments of the Day of Qiyamah should grant respite to the insolvent or waive off the debt.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1563)

Abu Bakr (radiyallahu’anhu) vomits out haram food

Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) says:

“Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) had a slave who used to pay him a levy from his earnings and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr would eat from this. One day he brought something and Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) ate from it. The slave asked him, ‘Do you know what this is?’ Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, ‘What is it?’ He said, ‘During my days of ignorance, I used to be a soothsayer for a man. I was not good at this, I would only deceive him. He met me and he gave me something for that service and that is what you have eaten from.’ Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) inserted his hand into his mouth and vomited all that he had in his stomach.”

The best type of earning

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
The best of earning, is the earnings of that worker who well-wishes [i.e. Is honest, upright, does his work thoroughly and correctly, one who has the well-being of the customer in mind].
(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 334)

💡There are several inspiring examples of the Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) & those after them adopting this beautiful quality.

💎One one occasion, a merchant came to sell cloth to Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah).
The merchant wanted 100 dirhams for it.
Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) said that it’s actually worth more. (Here, the buyer is actually raising the price!)
This person then asked for 200 dirhams for that cloth.
Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) said: ‘Its worth more than that!’
The person then raised the price to 300 dirhams.
To which Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) gave the same answer.
When the price was raised to 400, he said:
‘It’s actually worth more, but I’m prepared to pay 400 if you agree.’
(Fadail Abi Hanifah, 1/130)

👌🏽Such was the exemplary traits of our predecessors.

🤲🏼 May Allah Ta’ala inspire us all to follow.

Millions in seconds

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whosoever recites the following du’a in the bazaar/shopping area/mall etc will receive a million rewards, one million of his sins shall be forgiven, his rank will be raised by a million stages and (in some narrations) he will receive a palace in Jannah.”

Caution against Hajj with impure earnings

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“When a person departs for Hajj with pure earnings, places his leg in the stirrup and calls out ‘Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk’ a call is made from the heavens: ‘Present at your service, your provision and conveyance are halal, your Hajj is accepted without any sin.’

And when a man departs for Hajj with impure haram earnings, places his leg in the stirrup and calls out ‘Labbayk’, a caller from the heavens announces: ‘Your Labbayk is not accepted, your provisions are haram, your expenditure is haram and your Hajj is not accepted.’”

Some reasons for famine, inflation and oppressive leaders

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“…[Whenever a nation] lessens weights and measures [ie. is deceitful in business transactions], they will be afflicted with famine, inflation and and an oppressive leader. When they refuse to pay Zakah, they will be deprived of rain. Were it not for the animals, it will not rain [at all]…”

Well-wishing in business

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) mentions that he went with a man to the market, when they noticed a particular item being sold. [Sayyiduna Anas says] I enquired about it, the seller asked for thirty. The man [that I was with] looked at it and said: ‘I will take it for forty.’ The seller asked: ‘What prompts you to do this, whereas I am offering it to you for less?’ The man took another look and said: ‘I will take it for fifty.’ The seller asked: ‘What prompts you to do this, whereas I am offering it to you for less?’ He replied: ‘I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saying: ‘A bondsman will not be a true believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself’, and I see this to be worth fifty.’

(Musnad Bazzar, Hadith: 7548 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 1 pg. 95)
